Holy cow! Dundee’s Art & Design Undergraduate Degree Show 2024 to be an udderly wonderful spectacle

Visitors to the University of Dundee will get the chance to get up close and personal with these iconic beasts when the Art & Design Undergraduate Degree Show 2024 opens to the public next month.

The annual exhibition will open to the public from Saturday 25 May – Sunday 2 June in the Matthew and Crawford Buildings of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD).

With exhibits involving animals, AI, apps, and much more, there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy. 

Ewan Douglas, a Fine Art student from Forfar, had his bovine-inspired work selected to feature in this year’s marketing assets for the show. 

He is looking forward to welcoming visitors to meet his ‘coos’ and is encouraging visitors to milk the Degree Show experience and explore the underlying meanings of his work. 

“I’m delighted that audiences get a glimpse into my work ahead of the show,” Ewan said. “I'm even more excited for them to see it presented very differently when the full installation is ready. 

“Without giving too much away, my work looks at Scotland and the often-paradoxical nature of identity and stereotype.

“There appears to be quite contradictory representations of Scottish identity and with it stereotypes both from outside and inside the country - romanticism vs reality. The sculptures are a small part of my work that represents that.

“I can promise that, like many others, my exhibit will be entertaining and thought provoking, and I can’t wait to welcome visitors into DJCAD in May.”

The work of more than 400 students will be celebrated at this year’s Degree Show, with works covering a range of creative disciplines across multiple media and genres, from art, architecture and animation to illustration, jewellery, textiles and product design.    

Professor Anita Taylor, Dean of DJCAD, said, “The Undergraduate Degree Show is a highlight of the annual calendar for Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, the University of Dundee, and the wider city. 

“Through this showcase we are privileged to present the work of our talented final year students from our sixteen undergraduate degree programmes across Art and Design with our wider communities - public and professional.

“The 2024 Degree Show provides a unique opportunity to meet our latest cohort of graduates and to experience and enjoy the vitality and variety of their work and their creative and technical accomplishments.

“DJCAD is known for its excellence in creative education and for its vibrant, industry-connected approach to the development of its graduates for future careers in art, architecture, design, and the related creative and cultural industries.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone to celebrate and support our graduates and their achievements as we launch their future careers.”

The Degree Show will be open to the public from Saturday 25 May – Sunday 2 June. Opening times are Monday to Friday 12:00-20:00, and Saturday to Sunday 10:00-16:00.

Entry to the exhibition is free, and no tickets are required.
