Pioneering use of diabetic drug to treat heart disease

Researchers at the University of Dundee have launched a series of projects to determine whether a new class of anti-diabetes drugs could also be used to treat heart disease. Diabetes and heart disease are frequently seen together and can be a potentially lethal combination. Past and present anti-diabetic medications that lower blood sugar levels have been shown to improve some markers of cardiovascular disease, however there has yet to be conclusive evidence linking them to a reduction in rates of heart attacks and death. Dundee student to become Scotland’s oldest graduate

At 86 years-young, Alex Stewart will become Scotland’s oldest graduate, and possibly one with the most degrees when he graduates from the University of Dundee tomorrow. Alex, who left school at 14, did not return to education until the tender age of 65 when he enrolled on the University’s New Opportunities Course through Dundee College in 1995. Over the next decade, he attained five degrees including ones in Philosophy, American Studies and Town & Regional Planning. Graduation is an emotional time for all involved but the University of Dundee’s ceremony on Wednesday afternoon will take on special significance for the family of the late Connor Craig. Connor, remembered as a modest, generous and inclusive conversationalist by his fellow students, tragically passed away in March at the age of only 23.
