Staying safe online

Updated on 19 September 2023

Our cyber specialists have put together these tips as a guide for keeping you and the University safe while online.

Keep your password long and strong

A strong and long password will help protect you and keep your information secure. The more characters, the harder it is to crack.

  • only use your university email for university purposes
  • use different passwords, particularly for social media and online banking
  • use a password manager
  • consider using a passphrase of three random words

Use multi-factor authentication (MFA)

MFA helps protect your accounts and logins by adding another layer of protection in the event your password is compromised.

Be aware of your privacy settings on Social media

Check your privacy settings on social media and always think before you post. Be careful which apps you allow to access your data and check your privacy settings regularly.

The internet is an open space, anything you post can be found by anyone. Pick a username that doesn’t include personal information.

On average it takes 13 minutes to access 25 critical pieces of information from your social media.

Update your software regularly

Installing anti-virus software is another precaution you can take against cyber threats. Keep your anti-virus software up to date before you go online to protect your data.
