Connect to the University's wired (via ethernet cable)

For anyone not using a Staff Windows Desktop (a non-managed device), including students in accommodation. If you're using a managed desktop, you don't need to follow this connection guidance as your device has been configured for you

Connecting on Windows 

Enable Wired AutoConfig

  1. Click the Start button and type services.msc into the search box
  2. Locate and right-click on the service called Wired AutoConfig
  3. Click on Properties then select the Startup Type Automatic and press OK
  4. Reboot your computer for the changes to take effect

Setup 802.1X authentication

  1. Click the Start button and type Network and Sharing Center into the search box
  2. Click on Change adapter settings
  3. Right-click on your network adapter, usually called Local Area Connection and select Properties
  4. Click on the Authentication tab and select the option for IEEE 802.1X authentication
  5. Choose the network authentication method Microsoft:Protected EAP (PEAP) from the drop-down
  6. Click Settings (next to the network authentication method drop-down)
  7. Scroll down the Trusted Root Certification Authorities: list and tick QuoVadis Root CA 2
  8. Click on Configure and ensure the Automatically use my Windows log-on name and password checkbox is clear before clicking OK
  9. Click on Additional Settings in the Ethernet Properties window
  10. Tick Specify authentication mode and select User credentials from the drop-down list
  11. Click Save to the right of the drop-down box

Now plug the ethernet cable into your computer

A Windows Security dialog box should pop-up. Enter your University password and full username (including @dundee.ac.uk) then click OK.

Connecting on macOS

Install 802.1x profile

First download the 802.1x user.mobileconfig‌ zip folder to add the profile, then:

  1. Uncompress the 802.1x user.mobileconfig.zip folder
  2. Double click the 802.1x user.mobileconfig file
  3. You'll be presented with a window, click Continue
  4. You'll be prompted to confirm, click Continue
  5. You'll then be prompted to enter your login credentials. Use your University password and full username when asked, not your email address.
  6. You'll be prompted for and need to enter the local administrator/user password to progress with the install
  7. The profile will then install and when complete you'll be returned to the profile information page
  8. This can then be closed and your device should now obtain an untrusted (but still valid) IP address

Changing your password

You need to make a change on your macOS to continue to get internet access (via wired network) each time you change your University password.

Connecting on Linux

Centos 7 (Gnome)

Your network connection is in the top right of the screen. Click there, choose the Ethernet line (wording may be different), then select Wired Settings. In the pop-up window, click the cog on the bottom right and choose Security. Turn on 802.1x Security, fill in the required details (as below), then Apply.

Linux Mint 18 XFCE

Your distribution has a network connection applet on the bottom right. Left click the network icon then select Edit connections. Under Ethernet, click the required connection followed by Edit. Fill in the required details (as below) within the 802.1x Security tab, then Save.

The details you need

Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
CA Certificate: None
PEAP Version: Automatic
Inner Authentication: MSCHAPv2

Enter your University password and full username (including @dundee.ac.uk) when asked.
