Popularised by films like Wallace and Gromit’s A Grand Day Out, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Kubo and the Two Strings, stop-motion animation is an accessible way for researchers and students to communicate their research to a wide and varied audience. This workshop will introduce participants to a variety of applications and techniques for making animations (including paper cut-out, claymation and digital) as well as looking at how to turn your science topics into personable, engaging narratives. Participants will then break into small groups to get hands-on practice in planning and creating short stop-motion animations on iPads with guidance from our expert animator.
By the end of the session, participants will:
- Be familiar with different animation techniques
- Be familiar with different apps for creating animations on iPad or phone
- Understand the ways in which animations can appeal to audiences using narrative design, character design and artistic invention
- Have practiced translating their own study/research into a short animation
- Have an understanding of the ongoing Animating Science public engagement model
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the workshop.
